American Legion Post 977 was chartered in 1924. Without a building of their own, the founding members met wherever they could find space. Meetings were frequently held at the Altamont Enterprise Hall, the local newspaper or the firehouse hall. Following the first year, Enterprise Hall became their permanent quarters until 1950. In 1947, the property at 988 Altamont Avenue was purchased from Bert Weaver. In April of 1949, ground was broken for construction. The membership did about 75% of the work in order to reduce costs. The original blueprints, both delicate and crackly, are pictured on the right. The addition was built by a contractor, though the membership completed all the trim work and painting to cut down on costs.
In approximately 1937, Post 977 purchased and housed Altamont’s first ambulance, provided the entire village with silver and black house numbers and hosted the Altamont Parade. We provided classroom space when the Altamont High School was being torn down to make way for the elementary school. We hosted the very first Country Fest in 1987. We sponsor Little League, Boy Scouts and we donate to Girl Scouts. Each year, we send several youth to Boy’s State. We provide ceremonial disposal of the American Flag, regularly grocery shop for the Altamont Food Pantry, and donate to the Veteran’s Administration. Each year, we adopt several families at Christmas and support countless grassroots Veterans’ groups.
We are comprised of American Legion Members, American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion Riders and Sons of The American Legion. Post 977 is always present at parades, local fairs and to render honor to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of this nation. Collectively, we hope you will consider visiting us and possibly joining our ranks.
